OVERVIEW

With many believing that the future of gaming lay with optical media, Sega pushed towards that vision, as the Saturn was Sega's first ever stand alone CD based console. The surprise early release announcement at E3 '95 was to hopefully get a jump on the PlayStation 1; releasing later that year. Although it gave Sega a head start with sales, the sudden nature of the announcement left people, developers, and retailers in a sort of confused and frustrated state. On top of that, it was released at a price of $399.  Up to that point, it was the most expensive console Sega had ever released. Unfortunately, during the lifespan of the Saturn, Sega had a major decline in market share and interest here in the US. However, it had little to do with the actual quality of the now infamous Sega console, and more to do with the business decisions that led to Sega's downfall. With a fun, diverse, and unique library available, the Saturn has carved out a chunk of die hard collectors that will forever be fans. Not only that, but even decades later, it continues to make new fans all over again.
